What is Amlodipine used for?

Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessel walls, causing vasodilation, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's workload while improving blood flow in angina patients. It is mainly used for long-term control of hypertension and prevention of angina attacks, and is generally taken continuously to keep blood pressure stable.

How to take Amlodipine and adjust the dose

The typical adult starting dose is 5mg once daily, which a doctor may adjust after 1–2 weeks based on blood pressure response, up to a maximum of 10mg once daily. Smaller-framed, elderly, or hepatically impaired patients may start at a lower 2.5mg dose. It can be taken with or without food, but should be taken at the same time each day for consistent effect. Amlodipine side effects

• Common: ankle/foot swelling, dizziness, fatigue, facial flushing, palpitations
• Serious (rare): significant hypotension, fainting, arrhythmia, severe allergic reaction

Who should not take Amlodipine?

• Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to amlodipine or other dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers
• Contraindicated in severe aortic stenosis or cardiogenic shock
• Contraindicated in severe hypotension

• Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice while taking it
