What is Clotrimazole used for?

Clotrimazole is an imidazole-class antifungal that disrupts the fungal cell membrane, killing or inhibiting the fungi (and some bacteria) that cause skin ringworm and candidiasis. The topical cream relieves itching and rash from skin fungal infections like athlete's foot and ringworm, while the vaginal tablet treats vaginal yeast infections (thrush).

How to take Clotrimazole and adjust the dose

Skin cream: apply a thin layer to the affected area 2–3 times daily for 2–4 weeks; complete the full course even if symptoms improve early, to prevent recurrence. Vaginal tablets: choose the 1-day (500mg), 3-night (200mg/night) or 6-night (100mg/night) course per the product label, inserting the tablet high into the vagina at bedtime. Follow the specific product insert or pharmacist's instructions for exact regimen.

Clotrimazole side effects

• Common: local irritation, burning sensation, itching or mild redness at application site
• Serious (rare): severe allergic reaction/rash

Who should not take Clotrimazole?

• Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or other ingredients
• Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and nasal mucosa
• Consult a doctor before using vaginal formulations in the first trimester of pregnancy
• Use with caution while breastfeeding
• Latex condoms and diaphragms may be weakened during use of vaginal tablets
