What is Fluimucil used for?

Fluimucil (acetylcysteine/NAC) is a mucolytic that breaks the disulfide bonds in mucus proteins, thinning thick sputum so it can be coughed up more easily. This relieves chest tightness and difficulty coughing caused by excess mucus, and is commonly used for bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory conditions.

How to take Fluimucil and adjust the dose

Adult acute treatment: 200mg sachet 3 times daily for 5–10 days, or 600mg effervescent tablet once daily. Chronic treatment: 200mg 2–3 times daily, or 600mg once daily (preferably in the evening). Sachets/effervescent tablets must be fully dissolved in water before drinking. Pediatric dosing must be adjusted by a doctor according to age/weight — consult a doctor or pharmacist before giving to children. Mucolytics are not recommended for children under 2 due to risk of airway obstruction.

Fluimucil side effects

Common: nausea, vomiting, mild GI discomfort (indigestion, fever sensation)
Uncommon/rare: rash, bronchospasm (more with inhaled form), stomatitis (inhaled form)

Who should not take Fluimucil?

Known allergy to acetylcysteine
Active peptic ulcer
Phenylketonuria (PKU) patients must avoid Fluimucil A (contains aspartame)
Asthma patients require close monitoring; stop immediately if bronchospasm occurs
Generally not recommended for children under 2
