What is Loratadine used for?

Loratadine is a second-generation, non-sedating antihistamine that blocks the H1 histamine receptor, suppressing allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose/eyes, and hives. Because it crosses the blood-brain barrier less readily, it causes less drowsiness than first-generation antihistamines.

How to take Loratadine and adjust the dose

Adults and children aged 12 or over (or over 30kg): 10mg once daily. Children aged 2–5 or ≤30kg: 5mg once daily (syrup). Not recommended under age 2. Can be taken with or without food, as food does not affect absorption. Patients with severe liver impairment or elderly patients may need dosing every other day instead — consult a doctor.

Loratadine side effects

  • Common: headache, mild drowsiness or fatigue, dry mouth, stomach upset
  • Serious (rare): palpitations, arrhythmia, yellowing of skin/eyes (liver dysfunction), significant facial/throat swelling (severe allergic reaction)

Who should not take Loratadine?

  • Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to loratadine or other ingredients
  • Not recommended in children under 2
  • Dose adjustment needed in severe hepatic impairment
  • Patients with phenylketonuria should avoid aspartame-containing formulations (e.g. orally disintegrating tablets)
  • Consult a doctor during pregnancy
  • Watch for interactions when taken with antifungals like ketoconazole or macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin
