What is Lysozyme used for?

Lysozyme (brand name Eurozyme) is an enzyme that breaks down bacterial cell walls, inhibiting a range of Gram-positive bacteria, some Gram-negative bacteria and some viruses. After ingestion it is distributed in body fluids such as tears, nasal mucus and saliva, providing anti-inflammatory effects, helping break down mucus, and supporting the body's defence against infection — commonly used for sore throat and difficulty expectorating.

How to take Lysozyme and adjust the dose

Adults typically take 60–270mg daily in 3 divided doses (a common HK tablet strength is 60mg per tablet). Lozenge formulations may be used every 2–3 hours, or as directed by a doctor/pharmacist. Use in children should be under a doctor's guidance — there is no standardized pediatric dose. This is an OTC medicine; seek medical attention if symptoms persist beyond a few days.

Lysozyme side effects

• Common: skin rash, redness, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal discomfort
• Serious (rare): severe allergic reaction in those with egg allergy — including severe cough, urticaria and worsening eczema; eye swelling

Who should not take Lysozyme?

• Allergy to lysozyme or egg protein (lysozyme is derived from egg white)
• Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy
• Use with caution alongside other antimicrobial drugs — possible additive or antagonistic effects
