Telfast

What is Telfast used for?

Telfast's active ingredient, fexofenadine, is a second-generation, non-sedating antihistamine that blocks the H1 histamine receptor to relieve sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose/eyes from allergic rhinitis, and itching from urticaria. Because it crosses the blood-brain barrier less, drowsiness is generally mild. Telfast-D additionally contains pseudoephedrine to relieve nasal congestion.

How to take Telfast and adjust the dose

Adults and those aged 12 or over: for seasonal allergic rhinitis, typically 120mg once daily; for urticaria (hives), 180mg once daily. Take with water, avoiding fruit juice (especially orange, apple, or grapefruit juice) which may reduce absorption. Children under 12 should not take the adult-strength tablets and should use a pediatric formulation dosed by age/weight — check with a doctor or pharmacist. Telfast-D, containing pseudoephedrine, is commonly dosed once or twice daily, but confirm exact timing and maximum dose from the product insert.

Telfast side effects

• Common: headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, drowsiness
• Serious (rare): difficulty breathing/wheezing, facial or throat swelling, chest tightness, severe palpitations, acute widespread rash
• Telfast-D specific: rapid heartbeat, palpitations, raised blood pressure, dry mouth, insomnia, restlessness

Who should not take Telfast?

• Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any ingredient
• Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor first
• Use with caution in liver/kidney problems
• Use with caution with history of heart disease or arrhythmia
• Telfast-D additional contraindications: hypertension, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, urinary difficulty, diabetes, and concurrent psychiatric medication or other cold/flu medicines
• Avoid taking together with aluminium- or magnesium-containing antacids
